AMusingly, my mother is very rational and sensible. She travelled a lot when younger, and the ONLY time she truly believed she was going to die, was on the ferry to Orkney. It was so bad that they all had to lie down on the seats and hold onto the armrests, as they were dipping to the side that much! She was terrified, but she can laugh about it--albeit anxiously--now.
